THE INFLUENCE OF SELF-CONFIDENCE ON THE MENTAL TOUGHNESS OF MARTIAL ARTS ATHLETES

Abstract

Background. The background of this study is the important role of mental toughness in the success of student-athletes. Mental toughness serves to maintain and control performance in the face of adversity. Self-confidence is one of the factors that contribute to mental toughness. Self-confidence builds confidence to perform at a high level, resulting in mental toughness among pencak silat students. Martial arts athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of self-confidence on mental toughness. Mental toughness in student-athletes who participate in martial arts sports.

Method. This study took samples from all populations using the saturated sample technique. The study population totaled 60 students who participated in martial arts sports, namely judo, karate, pencak silat, wrestling, and fencing. Their age range was 15-18 years, with 26 female student-athletes and 34 male student-athletes participating

Data Analysis. Data was collected using the self-confidence scale instrument developed by Manzo et al. And the mental toughness scale from Gucciardi et al. Data analysis techniques used simple linear regression analysis

Results. The results showed that self-confidence affects mental toughness in martial arts student-athletes. The greater the self-confidence of a student-athlete, the greater the mental toughness, and vice versa. The R square test value is 0.251 based on data analysis. Thus, self-confidence contributes 25.1% to the mental toughness of martial arts student-athletes.
